Hey, [ profile] deireanach, another followup to a conversation some time back: apparently a study in Samoa has provided evidence for the kin-selection hypothesis as a method of conserving hereditary male homosexuality in a population.

(Which is totally polysyllabic code for "apparently gay men really do make the BEST uncles.")

That article is worded very strangely. I'm puzzled by their use of the word altruistic. I feel like another word could have been used there. And, it makes it seem as though you can choose which genes you pass on.

Traits can be adapted and changed, but genes can't.

I know what it's trying to say, but I had to read it like four times to understand.

Interesting study all the same. :)

I completely did not notice either of those bits of wording, which suggests I've been reading up on this stuff so long that I no longer notice the places where weird phrasing leaks straight into jargon. :D

You should be on AIM. I haven't talked to you in a Logan's age.

I miss your face.

I always vanish these months. It is tax season and I am doing stupid things like working a lot of overtime in HELL and not being able to do but collapse when I get home. (... the swine flu and the relatives didn't help, either.)

That is so seriously cool.

It's becoming more and more clear that there are a large number of behaviors which have genetic underpinnings. I've been reading about the genetic origins of stuttering lately, and if you've seen my latest LJ post, there's a link to a post on the neural pathways affecting dyslexia.

So much for the 'humans have no instincts' meme. Not that it had good legs to begin with, but there has been an awful lot of push-back against any claim of instincts for humans from various sectors. I won't speculate here why that's so, beyond saying that I find the idea of personality being determined by chemistry a bit squicky... and that I think that feeling squicky is good for me, 'cause it tells me where I may have an unexamined assumption that needs digging up.

Also, miss you! Yay that you've thumped swine flu, Oy! re: relatives, and 'Uh, gotta get to that...' re: taxes. Are you having (some) fun, at least...?

Going to add to the 'Miss you!' like, and very much hope you can shake the flu. u.u (I've had a sinus infection, but that's far more easily dealt with.) Been lurking on Loki's London game if you want to reach me. :) Get better!
