Fic: Thirty-One Decembers (#4)
Who: Kitty Pryde, Hisako Ichiki, Callie Betto, Andrea Margulies
Set: Back at the school, in the lead-up to a reasonably infamous issue
Disclaimer: All Marvel's, as usual

When Kitty had poked her head in and asked a gaggle of students if she could borrow Hisako for a moment, she hadn't expected quite as much company as she got. At least they were all girls. It could've been a serious problem if David had tagged along... or, heaven forbid, Josh.

"I'm swearing you all to secrecy, remember," she lectured in her most ominous tone. "Not one word -- could you tug that down a little more before you pin it?"

Hisako eyed the green cloth dubiously. "That's going to be pretty tight." She gave an experimental tug. Kitty fought the urge to hold her breath.

"Why don't you just use the synthesizers?" Callie asked. "We can show you how if you have problems --"

I built those damn synthesizers, plantbrat, and I used one of the machines I based 'em off of to hack into a Shi'ar war fleet when I was younger than you are now, so you can stop figuring I'm -- Kitty gritted her teeth and made herself smile. Callie was stuck on the Stepfords' team. Emma Frost, cubed, with adolescent queen-bee drama. And with Scott for an advisor, who wouldn't notice any impending disasters until they hit the team's tactical functions. No wonder Callie was trying her hardest to be useful any way she could.

"I like sewing," is what she said aloud instead. "And unstable molecules may be the niftiest things in the world for keeping yourself warm when your detention turns into 'shovel the driveway,' but if you're trying to get a look that ain't skin-tight, trust me, normal cloth is the way to go."

"This is going to be skin-tight," Hisako pointed out.

"Not after I get through with it. Well, I mean. This part is, but."

Andrea stretched her neck to peer around Hisako's shoulder. "It's going to have blood all over it if you're not careful, too," the girl fretted.

Hisako jerked her hand back and gave the younger girl a defiant look. "I'm not going to stick her with a pin!"

"And if you do," Kitty deadpanned, "I can phase before I bleed on the fabric. We're all good."

Dismayed, Andrea pulled squeamishly back to her normal dimensions in a hurry. Callie covered a laugh with her hand, then tried to change the topic. "Aren't you Jewish, Miss Pryde?"

Kitty occupied herself with trying to see Hisako's hands without actually changing her own posture. "That's right."

"So can I ask -- if you're Jewish," the dryad-girl pressed, "you don't celebrate Christmas, do you?"

"That's right," Kitty repeated. "I celebrate Chanukah." Briefly and somewhat selfishly, she hoped she wasn't going to get quizzed on that topic while half-naked in front of a bunch of teenagers.

Instead, Callie asked, "So why are you going to be wearing an elf costume?"

Despite herself, Kitty grinned. "Because, kiddo, with your advisor I realize this seems pretty unlikely, but some of the teachers around here know how to have a good time..."
